Section 8: Exposure Control/Personal Protection

For exposures exceeding 10 fibers per cubic centimeter, a NIOSH approved, half-mask respirator with High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter cartridge should be used.

Loose fitting, long sleeved clothing, leather or cotton gloves, and safety glasses with side shields should also be worn to protect skin and eyes from irritation.

Section 11: Other Information

Based primarily on the data from the artificial exposure studies in animals, IARC(International Agency for Research on Cancer) classified glass wool as "Possibly carcinogenic to humans."

A 1990 update of a U.S. mortality study reported a small but statistically significant excess in respiratory cancer among fiberglass manufacturing workers.

Glass Fibers are listed as Hazardous Materials under the Hazard Communications and/or environmental protection regulators of the following states: California, Illinois, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, and Washington.
